Hello from Italy !

Postby Pietro » Tue Jan 26, 2021 11:07 am

hello everyone,
my name is Pietro and I come from Trieste (Italy, FVG). I'm new to this community but not to the game. I've been playing Kick-Off for years (in its different versions, mostly KO2 extended version) since 1989 on Commodore Amiga 500. yes, I just can say that I grew up with this game. because of life, work and available time, I left my Amiga and old dreams in the 90's to enter the Windows PC environment, which I still use for both work and hobby. After many years of absence from videogames, a friend of mine introduced me in the amazing universe of Unreal Tournament (a well-known 1999 FPS by Epic Games). I'm still a fan of that game which I play sometimes but I never forgot the good old times, those of Amiga, of floppy disks and endless matches with my friends during summer (Kick-Off 2, Dynablaster, Speedball, IK+, Zoom, Drip), the times when we were all young and happy.

sad times now. as many people, I passed this 2020 almost always at home in smart working due to pandemic condition caused by covid-19. but this dramatic year, surprisingly, gave me also the opportunity to do some things I never would have done in other conditions: I spent some time on reviewing old interests like Amiga and retrogaming (MAME). some weeks ago, I installed WinAUE and casually I discovered these KO resources.

now I would like to get back to some Amiga games, especially KO, on Commodore Amiga or, more easily, on an pc-emulated Amiga. I discovered also that I can still use my old Suncom TAC-2 joystick with new Amiga emulators on Windows pc through an USB adapter, wow simply amazing, I love it !
I found very interesting this KO2 competition version (KO2CV) which I really didn't know. I never heard about it but I noticed when, some days ago, I watched the Kick-Off World Cup 2019 final on YouTube. it's really awesome the fact that people still develop for old games of the past (even though it's not a unique case: recently, for example, a new update of Unreal Tournament '99 was published for the community after 15 years). my hat goes off for you sirs, you're the best men.

ok, the time of questions has come :D
- are still around any italian players ? (in case, an italian KO community still exists ?)
- I'm a bit rusty about Amiga and emulators, where can I find useful infos (config, hardware, etc) ?
- I would need a USB adapter to use my TAC-2 joystick. I noticed this product (https://www.mayflash.com/Products/N64SNESSS/PC054.html) is not available. where I can find something similar with no latency ?
- I heard about an AmigaLive project, it supports also KO2, how about the lag during netplay ? someone tested it ? it's the same of Kick-Off2 online or it's a different thing ? sorry for the stupid questiom, but I've been far away from Amiga for too long...

I know, many questions so every hint or comment will be appreciated. thanks in advance :o

cheers,
Pietro

Hi and welcome!

https://KickOff2.net is where you need to go to get your daily KO2 gaming fix. Players from all over europe (including many from Italy) gather every evening to play together.

Here's the updated mayflash adapter which I have purchased and verified.
https://www.mayflash.com/Products/NINTE ... MF104.html

Another option is this little device,"USBJoy2.0" from stepstick.pl.

Just ask here if you need any help with anything!

Buongiorno Pietro! We do have friends from Italy on this forum, from Milano, Siena, and Cagliari at least. It's been a quiet year because of the pandemic, and sadly it was necessary to cancel the World Cup in Athens, but hopefully we will be back to normal later this year. Maybe we will even meet in a future World Cup. And until then, I'm sure Steve can answer all your questions about software.

Thanks everyone for reply and infos.
I've bought immediately the Mayflash USB adapter MF104 on Amazon, the parcel should arrive tomorrow and I hope to test my old tac-2 asap during weekend.
I joined also KO2 online, simply amazing. In 1989 I never would have thought to be able to play online 30 years after  now I need some recap with KO2 and learn all the options available in KO2CV :D

thanks again,
Pietro

I bought one of those but sadly mine didn't work correctly, only left and fire worked... I'm not sure if i just got a faulty one or they just aren't good for amiga compatible joysticks...

if you have the same problem, there's these https://monsterjoysticks.com/9-pin-joystick-to-usb-adapter ... I've not tried one but one of the players in KOOL uses one and says it's good... there's also a link to one in the controller tab inside KOOL too that is verified

I read about this problem just yesterday on discord. It seems the solution is to update the firmware to the latest version available.
product link: https://www.mayflash.com/Products/NINTE ... MF104.html
see the text marked in red (products features):
V1.08.13
1. Compatible with Atari 2600 controller.
2. Add Mode Button function.

I read on discord that the guy solved the problem after this update so I think it should work.

Yes, I found that adapter online in the previous days. In case, I'll take a look at them. Thanks.

Some awesome guy left this info on the amazon reviews.

"Out of the box this device may not also support atari-style joysticks, a great feature of the previous mayflash megadrive model (PC054), but with a quick firmware update (V1.08.13) downloaded from the mayflash website it gets fixed. Switch to XINPUT mode (green LED) for this to function correctly."

bad news:
the usb adapter works fine after the firmware update but the old tac-2 is about to die or it's dead: UP, UP-LEFT and UP-RIGHT positions don't work :(
after 25 years I finally found an adapter but lost the joystick, it seems the curse of the pharaoh :lolo:

uff, now I've to find another tac-2 or similar atari/commodre joystick or use directly a new one...any suggestions about modern usb joystick which can be used for KO2 ?

There is probably a simple fix. Open it up and check the wiring and the contacts inside. Sounds like the problem is related to the up direction.
Force a corner in KO2 and use the corner selection graphic as an aid. If you hold the up direction and wiggle the cable you may see it come back to life in certain positions.

This may be useful to watch..
