That's strange how Bill is above me Robert. How does that work out when I have won every tournament I have entered and also beat him at our battle in Ipswich over a whole day event? I am very confused and I would love to hear an explanation.

OK here is a brief overview:

Every result involves gain in points for one player and loss in points for another. No new points are created just by playing extra games. Every month, every player moves 1% closer back to 1000. Therefore everyone moves back to 1000 eventually, but it takes a very long time. What this illustrates is our lack of confidence in results as they get older - fresh evidence is always more valid to show CURRENT ranking.

POINTS PER MATCH

WIN (Team A) 18pts
WIN (Team B) 23pts
DRAW (Team A) -2pts
DRAW (Team B) 2pts
LOSS (Team A) -23pts
LOSS (Team B) -18pts
GOAL SCORED (Team A) 3pts
GOAL SCORED (Team B) 4pts
GOAL CONCEDED (Team A) -4pts
GOAL CONCEDED (Team B) -3pts

The above is based on mathematical ratios calculated on the relative difficulty of scoring and winning with Team A and B.

The points gain/loss from each game is modified by the difference in current ranking points between the competitors. Therefore high-ranked players don't get many points for beating the low-ranked players but have a lot to lose if they slip up.

Finally, every tournament has an importance modifier, based on the number of players/32. Therefore a win in a 5 player tourney is only worth 16% of the points difference compared to one in a 32 player tourney i.e. Dartford. Gloucester games are therefore worth 67%, ie. 24/32.

OK, the difference is purely due to the cup competition.

In the cup:
RIKKI gained 28pts from ROBERT for his 3-2 away win.
RIKKI lost 18pts to BILL for his 4-3 defeat.

BILL gained 39pts from DURBAN for his 10-2 home win
BILL gained 18pts from RIKKI for his 4-3 home win
BILL gained 32pts from DAN S for his 4-2 away win
BILL gaines 40pts from STEVE S for his 7-2 away win

Therefore:
RIKKI gained 10pts from the Cup
BILL gained 129pts from the Cup

I can go into more detail, but the points you got for winning the two London Gatherings were fairly small due to the low number of competitors (5 and 7).

Anthony, your points before Dartford were 1000 (i.e. unranked). You gained 18 points at Dartford, leaving you on 1018. This had reduced to 1017 by March due to time elapsed. You have not featured in any other tourney scores posted on here.

You started Gloucester on 1017, but over the competition lost 375 points, leaving you on 642. What can I say? You should have won more than 2 out of 23 games if you wanted to protect your 1017 points.

You only played 9 games in Dartford. Three of these were in the second round where you lost 3-0, 4-0 and 5-0. However you played 23 games in Gloucester, so even though these only count 67% we learn a lot more about your ranking from Gloucester than we do from Dartford.

Sorry, but there's no way to hide poor results in a spreadsheet. You can't look only at the good ones <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif">
