[Last update August 20, 2009]
Getting started:
A couple of things to do once and for all:
0) You can communicate in this KO2 chatroom which is always open (just open in your browser):
http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=kickoff
1) Download and unzip the latest KO2CV client with a necessary kcs.exe program included:
http://ko-gathering.com/wiki/images/6/6 ... online.zip (Version 1.00)
(This file is identical to the file linked to in the "Play Kick Off 2 on your PC" guide, so no need to download again if you already downloaded that file.)
2) Launch the program called kcs.exe (Bubble Bobble icon).
-- Click the switch so that it displays P2P/recorder.
-- (Close the program again. You only need to do this once and for all, unless you want to switch back to server mode instead of P2P.)
Launching KO2:
1) Double-click the Kick Off 2 icon (WinUAEXP-RKO2K.exe).
2) Go to the Kaillera tab and click the "Launch Kaillera" button.
3) In the new window, make sure "change mode: 1.P2P " is displayed in the top right corner
4)
The host:
Give your IP address to the other player (figure out your IP address by visiting http://whatismyip.com/).
Go to the "host" tab, select the game name (Kick Off 2 - Competition 1.00), then click the "host" button, and wait for the other player to connect.
The peer:
Click the "Connect" tab.
Type in the host IP address in the "Peer IP" field.
Click connect.
5) In the new Connection Window, once both players have ticked the "click here when ready" box, KO2 should launch.
If KO2 doesn't launch instantly, it probably means there is a connection problem, then go to the troubleshooting section below.
Operating:
1) If anything goes wrong, and you have to restart/retry, you have to go into Windows Task Manager and close the WinUAE process before restart (this is a close down bug).
2) Press F11 to chat.
3) Press F12 to enter options. Here the two players will choose their joystick/keyboard control modes (the "Game and I/O Ports" tab). The first player uses Amiga Joy Port 1, the second one uses Amiga Joy Port 0.
Troubleshooting:
1) If anything goes wrong, and you have to restart/retry, you have to go into Windows Task Manager and close the WinUAE process before restart (this is a close down bug).
2) If the connection between host and peer fails, it is likely due to a router/firewall problem.
a1) The host MUST have port 27886 open if he uses a router. If you are familiar with your router, look for an entry that allows TCP and UDP port forwarding, from port 27886 to port 27886.
a2) You may be behind a router without knowing it (your ISP may have one installed by default). One possible way to configure such a router may be to:
open your web browser
type http://192.168.1.1/ in the navigation bar.
In the NAT menu, add an entry that allows TCP and UDP port forwarding, from port 27886 to port 27886.
b) ALL PLAYERS should make sure that the program WINUAEXP-PKO2K.exe is allowed to accept incoming and outgoing TCP and UDP connection from internet.
c) Look out for stuff like Windows Firewall or similar firewalls that may also mess things up. Hopefully, steps equivalent to a) and b) should solve any such problems.
d) We are used to help people to solve these problems, as they can be a bit technical. Please don't hesitate to ask for help on forums or in the KOA chat if you get stuck. We will also be glad to help you test your configuration to see if it works properly.
3) Once the game is running, your joystick may not react even though your adaptor/joystick is working fine.
a) If you only connect your joystick to the computer after the launch of the client, the client will usually fail to recognize the joystick. A simple restart of the client will solve this.
b) To test if your adaptor/joystick works at all, use the Windows Control Panel, the menu where you can "calibrate" your joystick.
c) With the client running, try out the different combinations of PC joystick number and Amiga port number in the "Game and I/O Ports" menu (after F12). Activating PC joystick 0 in Amiga port 1 should do the trick for the first player.
4) After proper connection and launch, you can experience desynchronisation problems, usually resulting in a complete breakdown of connection between the players. These problems can and should be completely avoided by following any of the steps below:
a) Make sure that you are both running the same version of the KO2 online client. As of this writing, version 1.00 is used. The version is updated when a new version of KO2CV is released, and a new online client is built around this version.
b) If you fiddle too much with the settings file, it may result in desynchronisation problems. Work with the default settings during troubleshooting.
c) One type of issue is related to the menu "Game & IO ports" (the menu when you press F12 that allows you to choose your control input of choice). There are two input ports. You may have your mouse chosen for either port, and this may affect your opponent controller. The can result in desynchronisation.
d) If you are still having desynchronisation problems, a general advice is to close as many applications as possible (web browsers, messengers, peer to peer programs, mail programs...) until you have things working smoothly. Different computer systems may have different tolerance levels.
5) When things are working properly, you should have smooth 50fps KO2. If you don't have this, some reasons can be:
a) Stuttering due to a bad internet connection on either end. Address this by limiting any other traffic on your internet line. This could be things like MSN messenger, streamed video, ongoing downloads, etc.
b) Your computer system is struggling with the task of running the emulator smoothly. One particular problem can be an old graphics card. You can then improve the emulation by changing your monitor colour quality to 16 bits. To do this, go to your Control panel ---> Display ----> Settings . Change the colour quality to: 16 bits. Apply.
c) A general advice is to close as many applications as possible (web browsers, messengers, peer to peer programs, mail programs...) until you have found the tolerance level of your system.
6) There will be some joystick lag when playing online. You should have the KO2 running smoothly in 50fps, but you can't prevent joystick lag due to the way the KO2 online client works. In general, the bigger the distance between the two players is, the bigger the joystick lag. The joystick lag will be the same for both players when using the P2P method of online play. As a rule of thumb, it will take 2-3 games of 10 minutes to get used to any amount of joystick lag. After this, all (or most) advanced moves can be made with confidence. One detail: For unknown reasons, bigger lag means --> the possible minimum duration of a joystick input is bigger.
Advanced settings:
(Please don't fiddle with these until you have already managed to run online KO2 properly as it would make any troubleshooting much harder.)
The WinUAE KO2 online client has been dumbed down in order to prevent problems with conflicts between fundamental settings (like, which type of Amiga is being emulated). This means that you won't get the full WinUAE menu when pressing F12 while online KO2 is running. However, you can manually edit some settings in advance that may improve your online KO2 experience.
1) Open the "Configurations" folder.
2) Make a backup copy of the file "KickOff2.UAE".
3) Open the KickOff2.UAE file with notepad. This is the file where you can edit and save your settings.
4) The first thing you may consider changing is the display. I have
gfx_width=640
gfx_height=512
gfx_fullscreen_amiga=true
I have not experimented with the "gfx_correct_aspect" line.
5) The second thing is the sound. There is some unpreventable delay in the WinUAE sound emulation. For this reason I have chosen to remove the sound by choosing
sound_output=false
6) You can experiment with other settings (like making sure KO2 is launched with your preferred joystick input). To figure out your options, you can use the normal offline WinUAE and see which settings you can change in that GUI and then try to figure out the equivalent line in the online KickOff2.UAE file.

Re: Online P2P Kick Off 2 play QUICK STEP GUIDE
Interesting, how does it work? I mean, how do you feel the lag in game?
Re: Online P2P Kick Off 2 play QUICK STEP GUIDE
There is a bit of lag, it's significant, but you can get used to it. When I play with Logos, we can do all advanced moves, we just have to get used to the lag. Come join us!

We are online with Kostas O now, with Rayge as setup-assistant, so now is a perfect time to try and get some online KO2 action.

Re: How to play online Kick Off 2 -- Quick Step Guide
Can anyone suggest any other ways to get this working? Me and my brother tried setting it up following these steps but don't seem to connect.
I've tried setting up that port in my router but no joy? Am I missing something easy?
Thanks

Killera is "dead and old hat" ?
What about http://fs-uae.net/net-play net Play ?
It's cross platform unlike Killera. Throw the netplay server on a few servers across the EU (I have one with huge bandwidth and minimal latency in .fr), package the client and make it super simple, create a nice webpage that simplifies the process and boom, you make it simples for anyone to play ko2 online.
