But these are like the people that play Diablo 2 with map hacks. If there is no hard work, no skill involved, where is the reward?

e.g. A fwd can be trainned at the end of a season as mid (change role) so when the season changes, he has +10 (app.) at passing.

Alkis....goalkeepers: here's everything I know

All teams start with a good keeper. There's no point in searching for outfield players until you have one. If you are going to have 11 first choice players, the Keeper should be the first one you buy, and will be the 28 year-old in your finished side.

There are two advantages to this
1) Pace & Stamina (which decline with age) are less important to a keeper
2) You get 10 years' increases in Keeping

For a good side your keeper must have Keeping of 190 or above. Any lower and they will let too many soft goals in. This is especially a problem when playing other PM sides, where the strikers have 190 shooting. A striker with 190 shooting can blast straight through a keeper with 160 Keeping. With low keeping, you will also notice that he drops a larger number of shots, so 'old safe hands' really does need 190.

Other desirable features (I believe) are Height (for defending lobs and catching the ball) and obviously Pace/Stamina as will all players. A slow keeper will easily be run out of position, whereas a 200/200 keeper almost seems to teleport and pluck the ball from your strikers' feet.

Transfer value is less important for a Keeper than for other players, although value when finished (i.e. at 28) must still be over 1000k or it indicates he's not up to the job. Often when searching for new keepers, you may see a 1100k one that has only 160 keeping. His value will come from other high abilities. Then, you may find an 800k keeper with 180 keeping at 18.

I would say the minimum values (at 18) you can accept are:

Pace 170
Stamina 170
Keeping 175
Value 800k

If you buy shrewdly and get a keeper with 200 agility, these scores will increase more over the next ten years.

In advancing your keeper, you should aim to get Pace and Stamina close to 200 by the age of 23 (they will then start to drop off), with the aim of having neither below 185 at age 28.

For keeping, you should set yourself a target increase each year. Go for the biggest increases at the start, as you have no/few other players to consider apart from your keeper. Let's say his keeping is 175 at 18, I'd be looking for 179/180 at age 19. Not to increase would be unacceptable. By this I mean that next year you find quite a nice 1000k player, but your keeper's keeping didn't go up enough. Fine - reject the player and search more. Obviously if you get a 1400k player that is too good to refuse, then you can write off a year, but that's a nice problem to have.

Making the best teams is not just about the players you buy, but also the players you reject. I remember that 1 year in Chelsea, James rejected over 100 players. I'm not suggesting that anyone sane who is reading this should do the same - it's just that James set out to make the best team ever, and he had to not only buy great players, but monitor the changes in other player attributes each year.

There you go!

Maybe after all these years I should make a manual. Alternatively I could just spend half an hour with a hex editor and make whatever team I want.

Hehe! The hex editor will replace the "restart" trick! Personally I don't use the hex anymore. It destroys the fun of the game. <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Robert, you should really consider making a Player Manager tutorial, with screenshots and all.
