Kick Off data disks

Postby TheFoxSoft » Sat Jan 02, 2016 12:20 pm

Can you help me to list all the data disks of KO and their key features?
I try to list them:

- Kick Off 1 Extra time (1989?):
    implementation of aftertouch
    ....

- Kick Off 2 World Cup (standalone) (1990)
    PBD OFF
    world cup competition

- Kick Off 2 expanded version (standalone) (1990?)
    referees
    overhead kicks

- Kick Off 2 Returns of Europe (1991?)
clever implementation of the keeper with different level of difficulty
    tons of european clubs
    new competitions?

- Kick Off 2 Winning tactics (1991?)
    ????

- Kick off 2 Final Whistle (1992?)
    overhead kicks
    offside
    referees
    chants
double tactic (ie: 424 on ball possession, lockout on defending)

In 1991, we knew in Denmark that Kick Off 2 came first in a PBD version and then in a no-PBD version.

In 2002-2003, the KOA found out the same thing, despite Dino Dini derailing the discussion with a false claim that pirates had created PBD (in fact, Dino Dini himself had put in PBD already in Player Manager.)

The year is 2016. You ought not pretend to be falsely informed any longer.

I suspect my version was WC90, however, I am unfortunately not sure, and Thor could not remember either with regard to his version (which was also PBD with white print on blue disk). My mother has the box of my old game, but not the disk; I'll take a look next time I visit her and hopefully it will clear up which version it was.

I had several originals and data discs. I had the World Cup one among others. I remember eagerly anticipating the overhead kicks and offsides only to be extremely disappointed.

The version I kept playing had PBD. Like Dagh says it was blue with white print. At some point in the late 90s I changed to Oracle because I was afraid the original floppy would break.

We have also

Kick Off 2: Giants of Europe

and 2 other unreleased data disks
Kick Off 2: Super League (1991, espansione mai pubblicata)
Kick Off 2: Maths Disk (1991, espansione mai pubblicata)

I think all these data disks were quite advanced for that time (nowadays each game has tons of different versions and contents), but maybe it did not work in '90s year. Maybe a full game aka Kick Off 3 was better than releasing dozens of data disks.

I have a question? Why do you prefer KO2 instead of other data disks such as Return to Europe that has the best goal keepers so far?
My answer is at such time (90s) I didn't have KO data disk with exception of Final Whistle, that was great but the keepers were really too strong

for me, it was a combination of keepers being very strong, especially with lobs, overhead kicks and the pitches feeling a bit harsh on the eyes

Something that I have noticed is that the sound effects are different in the different versions. When you get a freekick in FW "the fans" sing a song and also when you score there are other effects than in the K02 original. Also when you do a "standing" tackle there are sounds effects from K02 Expanded and onwards I think.

Just to flag - there was definitely a version of KO2 pre World Cup edition.

I ordered KO2 directly from Anco as a day 1 release and received a blue disk + white lettering ... but once I found out they released a version with the World Cup I sent it back and received a replacement.

So ... definitely another version of KO2 ... but I can't tell you if it had PBD or not because I didn't know what it was back then!

Which data disk came out first? Final Whistle or Return to Europe?
