Play Kick Off 2 on your PC -- Quick Step Guide

Postby dnielsen » Fri May 01, 2009 6:44 pm

Just go to https://kickoff2.net for some KO action on your PC :)

[Last update May 2, 2009]

It is possible to play Kick Off 2 on any modern PC. There is a PC program (WinUAE) that emulates the Amiga. The result is 99% close to how it is to play on a real Amiga. It is also possible to play KO2 online against other humans. This Quick Step Guide will tell you how to get going in a few minutes:

There are two steps:

1) Downloading the purpose built client. This client allows for both off-line and on-line play.
2) Getting a joystick suited for Amiga games on the PC (if keyboard or joypad is not your kind of thing).

STEP 1 -- downloading and running the KO2 client:

a) Download and unzip this file:
http://ko-gathering.com/wiki/images/6/6 ... online.zip (Version 1.00)
b) Double-click the Kick Off 2 icon (WinUAEXP-RKO2K.exe). Now the WinUAE settings menu will open.
c) If you want to play in full screen mode, tick the "Full-Screen" box and select resolution 640x480, 16bit.
d) Click the "Game and I/O Ports" tab to set your controls. It is your choice for "Amiga JOY port 1" that matters.
e) Click "OK". Now Kick Off 2 will launch.

While KO2 is running, you can press F12 to enter the options menu.

Here is a brief video showing the above steps and how easy it is to get started:

To play online, there are a couple more steps to do. Go here for the Online Quick Step Guide:
http://ko-gathering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=15384

STEP 2 -- play with an authentic Amiga joystick

To play KO2 (and other Amiga games) with a proper joystick on a PC, you have two options:

1) Buy this Joystick:

http://www.vesalia.de/e_competitionusb.htm

It is a remake of the old popular Competition Pro Joystick for the Amiga, with a USB stick to the PC (it also comes in a 9pin version that can be used with an Amiga). It is a joystick of good all-round quality.
(If you choose to buy the joystick from another seller, make sure you are buying the new model manufactured by SPEED-Link. There was another recent remake from another manufacturer of much worse quality.)

2) The second option is to buy two things:

a) An Amiga-9pin-to-PC-USB adapter.
b) Your old favorite Amiga Joystick.

You can buy an Amiga-to-PC adapter at one of these two places:

http://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/at ... y=Adapters
http://www.atariage.com/store/product_i ... cts_id=267

Both sellers have been used by KOA members without problems.

To buy an old Amiga Joystick, look at Ebay. You can probably find your favorite model there (maybe a bit of patience will help if you used a rare model). You may also find an adapter at Ebay.

The advantage of option 2 is that you can then also use your joystick in official live KO2 tournaments. These tournaments are of course played on real Amigas :P

Place-holder for possible additional info.

-----------------

There is another option for off-line play (the one above uses the purpose built client for KO2): You can use the general WinUAE client and play KO2 here as well as any other Amiga game. Go here for a simple video tutorial:

In KOA, we use a "Competition Version" of KO2, the KO2CV. You can get the ADF of the latest version here:

Good news, my Swedish brothers!

Jacob, if you can't wait for your adaptor to arrive, you are also always welcome to take the train and visit me for some off-line Kick Off 2 (we might entice Nick to come and play too).

hi there.

kick off 2 is far and away the best game i have ever played. i still have the amiga but it is temperamental and tends to crash. so when i found this guide to play it on the laptop i was over the moon. however, having loaded it up as per the above instructions, it runs slowly, with each second taking about 3 seconds in real time. the lap top is only 2 years old so i wouldnt have thought that was the problem. Have i not done something right for it to run at full speed? I'd be grateful if anyone had any ideas how to resolve this, i want to play it soooo much. Thanks.

Been trying it on laptop earlier, but didn't wanna work. Can't remember the reason, but desktops are generally better (if I'm not totally wrong...)

thanks freshmaker.

I've found it runs at correct speed so long as i do not select full screen, but then click the full dcreen icon at top right hand side. my brother has now downloaded too, and we tried to connect together to play online but had no luck. went into my router to open port forwarding thing but at that point it gets a bit unclear exactly what i should put where. when we both click mark as ready nothing happens. can you point me to the best place to get specialised advice in getting this up and running please?

Welcome to the forum, buistyboy. :) These things can be a pain to get set-up but once done, it'll be worth it.

Are you using the suggesting display settings, 640x480, 16bit ?

buistyboy wrote:can you point me to the best place to get specialised advice in getting this up and running please?

Right here! Hopefully between us all we can help you out. If you're still having difficulties, post as much details as possible about the settings your using. There's also this thread in case it contains anything else you haven't tried. Good luck!

hi again and thanks for the replies. you guys make me feel very welcome and i appreciate your helpfulness. To answer your queries, i am setting it up as 640 x 480 16 bit, with laptop set up as 16 bit too. as i say, it runs slow if i also click full screen, but if i leave it smaller, then it is also slow until i click the full screen icon on top right hand of screen. then i have the same smaller screen but now with a black border to fill screen and it runs at correct screen.

Where the online problem lies, my brother and i both tried to open port 28667 manually as per the guide, but my brother ended up losing his internet connection altogehter lol, and while i got the port forwarding/triggering page, i wasnt 100% sure what to put in. for service name i wasnt sure if i could just choose a name that i knew would relate to kickoff but have put WINUAEXP-PKO2K.exe anyway. for serice type, i chose TCP/UDP. For starting port and ending port i put the 27886. It then asks for server i.p address and i wasnt sure what i put there. tried my own i.p and it said failed, needs to be lan i.p or something like that. I downloaded the link kindly provided by Steve, but it seems to require a payment which to be honest i can't really afford to pay at the moment, and i feel i am close to getting there. If you could clarify the server i.p address that could help. And if i get that sorted, can i be a host for my brother to play me without him doing anything more. (he has downloaded the winuae etc no problem). there is also a line in the instructions that says "b) ALL PLAYERS should make sure that the program WINUAEXP-PKO2K.exe is allowed to accept incoming and outgoing TCP and UDP connection from internet". how can i check that is the case? Once again, i appreciate your assistance and would love to be able to join you guys for a game online sometime soon (not that i'm much good lol). cheers.
