[Official thread] Team building (Update 20/1/07)

Postby TheFoxSoft » Fri Jan 19, 2007 7:18 pm

Hi guys,
i need your help in team building. Throw In 0.8 supports 32 champion's league teams. What i need is having teams and players informations.
The best would be that an english guy does english teams, a greek does greek team, etc...but of course is not a requirement Post here your preferences.

Please note we will not use real players but of course nothing stopping you on making a great fake brasilian star playing for Barcelona for example.

1 AEK Athens

OK, Olympiakos for me Gianluca.

How using real players is not possible but real team names is? I thought the same legal blocks apply to both, but it's your call of course.

I don't care about copyright (it's a free game) i just think fake players makes the game deeper.
Btw nothing can stop us to make real teams...

I think that the majority prefer real player names. I'll make two versions of Olympiakos for you, one with real names and the other with slightly altered names.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, maybe we could discuss it somewhere else.. As you know we're fighting the same issue with WOF - do you have any experience or legal proof that you can get away with using real names even if the product is free?

Gianluca, I think you're wrong not to worry about the licenses for real names. The fact that the game is free won't stop the FIFpro or whatever from sueing someone.

There is, however, a good workaround to this:
- everyone collects alle the real name information
- before you put it in TI, you change all the vowels according to a certain pattern
- then you release the TI beta with the mangled names
- the community here will create an editor that can automatically change the vowels back
- everyone will download your beta and also the editor, which is hosted elsewhere
- the changing of the names is done on everyone's local machine, so they never have to be offered as a download

But I must say I also like the idea of creating completely made up player names. It should ofcourse reflect the kind of players that play or have played for the club. For example, PSV has had several Brasilian strikers in the past, amongst which were Romario and Ronaldo. So it would be fitting to create a star player named Romeldo.

If using the full names of the clubs is a problem, then I would suggest using the name of the city they come from. When there are duplicates (Chelsea and Arsenal) you can expand it with a nickname (London Blues and London Gunners).

P.S. you can find much useful info on WIKI pages like this:
