PM questions

I always thought I knew a lot about PM, however I played on the ST and its slightly different.

However I now realise I am far from experienced compared to some of you so I would like to ask a few questions.

1) When you are PM and are injured you are not allowed to play as a team (Ie you can't control anything). Is this the same on the Amiga?

2) When you hang up your boots what happens? Are you then allowed to control the team again without your presence?

3) When should I hang up my boots, I am currently 37, I still have pace of 140 and stam of about 140, I have retrained as a defender.

4) When buying players, how can I tell who is good and who is crap? I mean on the purchase screen you get the estimated skill (10/10 etc) but other than that what should I be looking for.

5) Before the end of the season (in the free weeks you get) I tend to buy a few 18yr olds from the xfer list who are between 1 and 20k. My plan is that they will go up a bit next season if I am lucky, or I may even get a superstar (Last night I paid 1k for an 18yr old Keeper, his keeping was already 142, and by the new season it was 152) Am I right to do this, is this a common tactic?

6) How on the amiga do you force your team to use 442 by default, it always resets to 424 ffs.

7) Is it actually worth making up a tactic, does it increase your teams performance at all when you are not in control or is it a waste of time?

8 ) When looking at players what should I be looking for - at the moment I base it on
a) Keepers - Keeping
b) Defenders - Tackling, Passing, Solidness
c) Midfielders - Tacking, Passing, Solidness, Pace, Stamina
d) Strikers - Shooting, Pace, Stamina

9) When buying players I generally only look at players 18, 19 or 20 as I like having a youthful team and building them up. However I will sometimes look at the odd older player too boost the overall skill level. Is this ok to try and keep my team youthful?

10) How often should I give the squad Extra training? And how often should I let them 'take a break'. I normally give 2 extra trainings then one break. Then leave it a week and same again.

11) If your team says for example Defence 3/10 I presume this is an average. Is it worth getting rid of the crap players to increase this average or is a bigger squad more worthwhile.

12) How can you sack players? In the ST version you could sack players I am sure, but on the Amiga there is no similar button that I can find.

13) What pleases the board more, a good cup run or a high league place?

14) When you retrain a player for a different position how do you know its having a positive effect?

15) Do the players positions in the tactics have any effect on their skill levels. For example if a midfielder is used as number 11 in 424 will he be as effective playing 11 in a 442 formation (where the 11 is more or less up front instead of left midfield)

16) Why when I play as a centre back and let the computer predict the results do I score more than when I am playing up front? Bizarre but true.

17) If you have two keepers. One who is 18 with keeping of 150 and one who is 29 with keeping of 160 which should you play? I always thought that if you let the youngster play then you will see a greater increase in skill at the start of the new season, am I making this up or am I correct to use the youngster at least for a few matches if he is to be my long term future keeper? (Obviously this applies to all positions, like a striker who is 18 and shooting is about 150, compared to a 30yr old with 180)

18) Can you not fine players for being sent off a lot? I am sure you could on the ST but this isn't available on the Amiga (Again I may be imagining it on the ST). How else can you control players who get sent off a lot?

19) Is there anyway of increasing a players durability. I have one player who is a superstar, but he gets injured every second match it seems. Is there nothing I can do for this lame donkey?

Many thanks, I actually gave up a night of poker on Sunday evening to play PM all night.

I have 3 games on the go, one of which I am Macclesfield Town and my manager is in his 11th season. Still aint seen a 1mil player tho, although my injury prone superstar above is worth 800 at the mo and is only 20

Doesn't agility give an estimate to how good the passing, tackling and shooting are?

I always used to buy the more expensive players at the beginning before other clubs do, but this is a good way to get the cheaper ones. Although you may get good players from the 1-20k range, I don't think they will evre become superstars and worth that much in value however.

12) How can you sack players? In the ST version you could sack players I am sure, but on the Amiga there is no similar button that I can find.

I think the only way to sack players is to wait until their contract is expiring (i.e. when they hace a C by their name), not renew it, and they leave at the end of the season.

14) When you retrain a player for a different position how do you know its having a positive effect?

The way I always judge is top compare the values of the player in the different positions.

10) How often should I give the squad Extra training? And how often should I let them 'take a break'. I normally give 2 extra trainings then one break. Then leave it a week and same again.

I've always wondered if both extra training and matches played had an impact in the player's development the next season.
I'm sure with the bug on the WinUAE version, where sub's sometimes 'score' 15 goals they get a skill increase the next season?

19) Is there anyway of increasing a players durability. I have one player who is a superstar, but he gets injured every second match it seems. Is there nothing I can do for this lame donkey?

Must have crap resilience

OK stand back everybody, I am the Player Manager expert around here.

1) When you are PM and are injured you are not allowed to play as a team (Ie you can't control anything). Is this the same on the Amiga?

Shit I can't remember. When you hang up your boots you can still play as team, so I don't see why an injury stops you.

2) When you hang up your boots what happens? Are you then allowed to control the team again without your presence?

Yes.

3) When should I hang up my boots, I am currently 37, I still have pace of 140 and stam of about 140, I have retrained as a defender.

Are you still picking yourself in the team? If not, retire.

4) When buying players, how can I tell who is good and who is crap? I mean on the purchase screen you get the estimated skill (10/10 etc) but other than that what should I be looking for.

VALUE is everything. It's calculated mechanically through the stats. Good players are never cheap. However crap players can be expensive. The most important ability is Pace. You can't see the player skills so you are taking a gamble. However if you see a player with high abilities (Pace, Stamina etc) that is cheap then his skills will be shit. To make great teams worthy of use in KO2 then only buy players of around 1000k and above.

Yes, but the BEST time to buy players is actually in the FIRST week of the season, before your first match - this is when all the new 18 year old players are created and you get the pick of everyone. If any 18 year old players appear in the 500k category in the first week you can be SURE that the CPU teams will buy them and they won't become available again.

6) How on the amiga do you force your team to use 442 by default, it always resets to 424 ffs.

In Tactics, you can load 442 into the first slot, currently occupied by 424?

7) Is it actually worth making up a tactic, does it increase your teams performance at all when you are not in control or is it a waste of time?

When you are not in control, custom tactics will generally not aid the CPU. This is because you play differently to the CPU. For example you use a shot to be a long pass. Custom tactics for human use, however, are an excellent idea and one of the means at your disposal to make an otherwise very hard game winnable.

8 ) When looking at players what should I be looking for - at the moment I base it on
a) Keepers - Keeping
b) Defenders - Tackling, Passing, Solidness
c) Midfielders - Tacking, Passing, Solidness, Pace, Stamina
d) Strikers - Shooting, Pace, Stamina

What is solidness?

The absolute minimum for all players is that they have Shooting and Pace over 100. In PM, low shooting players can kick the ball off target to a level even exceeding 45 degrees. And low pace players do not feature in the game because they never arrive at the ball before someone else has kicked it.

9) When buying players I generally only look at players 18, 19 or 20 as I like having a youthful team and building them up. However I will sometimes look at the odd older player too boost the overall skill level. Is this ok to try and keep my team youthful?

Once you are established in the First Division you should ONLY be buying 18 year olds and bringing them on. Before this, buy whatever crap you can afford as long as it's fast enough to get the ball and can kick it straight once it arrives.

10) How often should I give the squad Extra training? And how often should I let them 'take a break'. I normally give 2 extra trainings then one break. Then leave it a week and same again.

I have no idea what Extra Training does.

11) If your team says for example Defence 3/10 I presume this is an average. Is it worth getting rid of the crap players to increase this average or is a bigger squad more worthwhile.

It is an average. You can improve it by removing the runts. My theory is that this will then improve your chance of winning on 'Result Only'.

12) How can you sack players? In the ST version you could sack players I am sure, but on the Amiga there is no similar button that I can find.

Interesting question. I guess you just let their contract run out. Don't know about sackings.

13) What pleases the board more, a good cup run or a high league place?

I have a feeling they are also interested in money, although I may be wrong.

14) When you retrain a player for a different position how do you know its having a positive effect?

It has THREE effects.

a) The player's VALUE will be different in the new position. Higher value indicates a good choice of retraining.
b) The player's MORALE is affected by their position. If they 'agree' with it then their morale increases and vice versa. I think 'agreeing' is linked to whether their value went up or down.
c) You will love this. At the end of the season, when you move on to the next, each player gets a ONE OFF boost in skills. Now, if they are trained as a Keeper, it will be in Keeping. Defenders - Tackling. Midfielders - Passing. Forwards - Shooting. USE THIS WELL to produce good rounded players. You can retrain people at the season end in a weak position and put them back in their original one at the start of the next. Also, note this well
i) Higher AGILITY = Higher primary skill increase (theory)
ii) The lower the skill, the more it increases!

15) Do the players positions in the tactics have any effect on their skill levels. For example if a midfielder is used as number 11 in 424 will he be as effective playing 11 in a 442 formation (where the 11 is more or less up front instead of left midfield)

It depends on whether you are playing or the computer, and how much you make use of Tackling, Passing, Shooting etc. The computer uses Passing more than humans.

16) Why when I play as a centre back and let the computer predict the results do I score more than when I am playing up front? Bizarre but true.

No idea.

Go for the one with higher Keeping, although I believe that Height is important for Keepers as is Stamina (player skills deteriorate in game).

18) Can you not fine players for being sent off a lot? I am sure you could on the ST but this isn't available on the Amiga (Again I may be imagining it on the ST). How else can you control players who get sent off a lot?

Hmm can't remember.

19) Is there anyway of increasing a players durability. I have one player who is a superstar, but he gets injured every second match it seems. Is there nothing I can do for this lame donkey?

The ability RESILIENCE determines injury-proneness.

I have 3 games on the go, one of which I am Macclesfield Town and my manager is in his 11th season. Still aint seen a 1mil player tho, although my injury prone superstar above is worth 800 at the mo and is only 20

You are only likely to see 1000k players on the first day of the season when the new 18 year olds appear. Guess what.... you can MAKE one appear by saving the game at the end of the season and restarting it several times until one appears. Warning, this can ruin your life.

JZ knows what he's talking about.

Incidentally I wrote various Player Manager tips and tactics for 'The Aftertouch' and if you can't find it online I can mail you the (incomplete) articles.
