My Diary of the Weekends Events - Tis indeed long <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Friday 2nd November
Well how excited was i getting up on this morning. Could wait to get to work
knowing that at 12:30 I would be on my way. First stop was Luton town centre
to pick up the Greek Competitors, Vasilis and Alkis. Sorted. Introductions
over we headed of down to Stainy's Mum's house for what in the end turned
out to be a 'no need' trip. Still we picked up the 'Joyboard' and then the
final leg of my journey to Dartford. We got lost it has to be said, I blame
the computer for this, mapquest.co.uk got the M25 Junction wrong and that
was it. One phone call to Steve later and we arrived at the hotel <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> The first
competitor we met was Steve 'CamberGoal' Camber, soon followed by the
imfamous Beard Bros. A trip to Anco headquarters was arranged and saw the 6
of use get lost on the way, are you seeing a common theme here. Another call
to Steve and we arrived to be greeted not only by Steve, Anthony, Carl and
the other Anco members but also Anil Gupta, MD of Anco. After a few good stories
and a cup of tea from Mr. Gupta, it was back to the Hotel to get some practice
in. Up to the Beard bros. room we marched, joysticks in hand !! There was the
projector in all it's glory and thus we started. First game, myself vs Alkis,
the result, the best of the weekend for me (5 - 3 to Alkis). Three goals against
the future world champ, I was buoyed by this result having stated all along
I was crap. My next game 2 - 1 win against Jim Beard, next a 1 - 1 draw
with Steve Camber, both future QF'ists. This however was about as good as it
got for me <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif">

The evening saw us have a meal and beer at TGI Fridays, which was an
excellect way of getting to know everyone who had arrived that day (pity Andym
couldn't join us). The draw of course was the main event, very well organised
by the winner Alkis. Good job buddy. As the names were drawn out the excitment
grew, the only thing we didn't know was how good anyone was !!!

A speedy taxi saw us back to the hotel for some more Practice (well done Nazim
for bring his TV). I can't remember many of the results from them, I know I lost
to Steve 3 - 1 but i'm blaming that on my girlfriend WHO ring who my mobile in the
middle of the game and putting me off. Anyhow bedtime (2.30am).

Saturday November 4th

Got up around 8-8.30, so that's about 6 hours sleep !! Had a practice game against
Nazim, and managed a 7 - 4 loss, still not bad bearing in mind how good he was to
be over the weekend. Down to breakfast and then a trip to Anco on hardware transporting
duty, brought back 3 TV's in two trips whilst also having a look at the 'interesting'
posters on the walls of the Anco Offices !!! Shame !!! Filth !!!!

Finally into the Tournament room <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> Spent the next hour or so crawling about
under desks plugging cables into wall sockets and Amigas into TV's. Done. 4
Amigas & TVs ready for the tournament to start at 12:00 sharp <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif"> Had a couple
of Practice games lost 7 - 1 to Martin Beard, not looking good, and then an
8 - 1 loss to Steve Camber, damn !! Thus i was on the slippery slope to no-wheresville
and 26th in the Rankings.

Finally at about 1.30 we started, everyone present except Mr. Gurney <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif"> Still missed
ya boy. Of course I had two jobs for the weekend, and it would appear that Video
Interviews are much easier to conduct than playing against anyone. I did managed a
pretty easy 2 - 0 win against Niels, but after that it went wrong. I led twice
against Anthony 1 - 0 and 2 - 1 (after his Lob from the Kickoff the F&*king Wan&er), but
still lost 3 - 2. Then I was killed by having to play MrDig straight after and had
a humiliating 8 - 0 defeat. Next up was James Beard another games I led in I think,
but still lost 4 - 2. Then two 3 - 1 losses to Vasilis (another lob from the Kickoff,
you owe me one mate !) and Fillipo.

During the rest of the non-game time I was trying to coerce anyone one into having
an interview. Some people came from games looking very much the worse for wear and
starred blankly at the camera unable to sum up what had just happened. But on the
whole it went pretty well. I have looked at about 20mins of the footage and it'll
be well worth the watch, no doubt <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

By the end of the first days play I was quite enjoying not playing, the stresses
and strains shown by people as they tried their hardest to qualify was intense to
say the least. At the end of play we had 16 worthy players, battle scarred and
blurry eyed ready for the games tomorrow.

A final match-up would prove to be the game of the day. As the 'Game-of-Shame' would
decide the winner of the Shirt of Shame !! Andy vs Niels was a titanic battle
of missed oppotunities and good sportsmanship. The crowd was the largest and loudest
of the day and much praise to both players for handling THAT much heckling. In the
end Andy was the victor 2 - 1, but it could have gone either way. Niels was very
gracious in defeat and proudly accepted and wore the dreaded shirt.

The evening saw many make the trip to deepest Dartford to letch at the ladies.
Whilst a select few of us retired to the Hotel bar and drank beer, waited for and
eventually ate Pizza (and Garlic Bread!!) and talked about the days events. An
excellent night in it has to be said. But not the end as Alkis arrived back from the
town for some MORE practice. So at about 11:45 we all trudged back to the Tournament
room for some 'Just-For-Fun' games. No one was giving much away however and it was tricky
to tell how much each player was trying. Bedtime 12:30.

Sunday 4th November

Got up 7:20, wow 7 hours sleep <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> After a shower I played Nazim twice with a
5-3-2 formation so he could try and get some idea of the game ahead against
Foxsoft. Any near chance I had we decided was a goal seeing how deadly he was
with a sight of goal. Two narrow wins 5 - 4 and I think 6 - 4, showed the difficulty
of the morning ahead.

Into the room by 9am and the pressure was building nicely, well for the competitors
anyway. Three groups had a Star Player each (Alkis, MrDig & Nazim, and Foxsoft). Whilst
the 4th would be the closest group of them all, with goal different being the deciding
factor as James Beard's 3 - 0 win over group champ. Steve Camber saw him edge out
Jacob as their match ended as a 2 - 2 draw, phew !! The other groups although not
as close also had a few dramatic results Reimpie beating Kees to scrape through
being one of the best.

So onto the QFinals. Boy the games were getting serious now !! Classic of the round
is MrDig vs Nazim. First game sees Nazim, break MrDig's 'no loss no draw' group stages
with a 4 - 2 win. This sets up the thriller, a tense battle that could of gone either
way, in the end a 7 - 4 win sees MrDig win it 9 - 8 on aggregate, blimey. The other
notable game sees James Beard keep Alkis respectable with a 3 - 1 loss followed by
a 1 - 1 Draw, only the second 'non-win' of the weekend for Alkis !!

A break now to calm all nerves as we enter the 'Crypt of Competition' final stages with
the lights all off and the projector on this was what all we'd all been waiting for,
SemiFinals.

Over two legs the 4 remaining players battled hard and we had our two finalists. The
atmospshere in the room was electric and I hope I managed to capture all this on the
video, given the blacked out room. It may be tricky but the noise was loud and being
able to film the game on the projector was a definite plus point. Trying to mix up
the footage with game on projector, the manic crowd and intensity of the players
should hopefully give us all the elements that made the weekend such a great success.

The result in the end was a win for Alkis which he fully deserved. Disappointment
for the runner up MrDig, who came close and to Foxsoft our top scorer.

The weekend was a real success, no one can have imagined 8 months ago, when Steve
first appeared on the forum that this would happen. It was a real pleasure meeting
everyone there, new friends all.

Bring on next year in Greece <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">
