Some of you may remember what I said in a post a couple of months ago: Anyone of us can score 6-7 times during a game. But only a handful of us can keep experienced player from scoring more than 2-3 goals.I also said that I never lose against a 4-2-4 formation.
Now that it's all over, I can safely say I was right. I conceived 16 goals in 16 games, that's 1 goal per game against me. Pretty good.
After the first few matches of the tournament, I realized 4 players were somewhat better than the rest: Nazim, me, Mark and Gianluca. I was mostly impressed by Mark among these four, and some of you may remember that I suggested he was the favourite since his third game. The reason? His attitude. While the rest of us were jumping, shouting, laughing, he kept a totally serene poker face during his games, whether he scored a goal or conceived one. It looked like he was certain he was going to win the trophy. It made me nervous.
While we were out at a pub on Saturday night, I pointed out that fact to him. He told me he felt a lot more stressful than he looked. Without knowing it, he gave me a great reason to feel more calm in the final.
While he and Gianluca were competing in the semi finals, one goal following the other, I told Mark Elliot that there was no way anyone of them could score so many goals against me in the final. If they wanted to beat me, they'd have to play defence.
The big event was about to begin. We took the final picture before the kick off (the tallest player of the tourney against the shortest, funny). We'd toss a coin to see who gets Team A. Mark chooses heads. Steve flips it. Heads. Damn.
Mark selects a 4-2-4 formation. That was his first mistake. I started with my usual 5-3-2.
The game began. A minute or so after kick off, I fail to kick the ball away. Mark scores. The crowd goes wild. Cold sweat. Deep breaths, deep breaths.. 19 minutes is a lifetime.
The next 5-6 minutes were probably the best ones I've played in Dartford. I eliminated all mistakes. I kept gaining possesion of the ball after each goal kick, and had total control of the match. I managed to score 4 times before half time. 4-1, good score, but there were still 10 minutes to go, and I knew Mark could easily score 5 goals in 10 minutes.
At the beginning of the second half, I substituted my last defender (#5). Mark made no substitutions. That was his second mistake. Perhaps he had never played a 20 minute match before. I had practiced a few 20 minute matches in Greece. Confident, wasn't I?
During the whole second half, I kept my joystick down (I was attacking the up pitch)and I waited for him. I only used one man to attack, with long balls. Mark had to attack against 3 and 4 defenders. Whenever he managed a long ball, my fresh last defender, faster than all his players who were beginning to get tired, cleared the ball away.
One of his long balls gets through. I have no choice but to tackle. I miss. A penalty is given.
I'm watching the arrow go from left to right like a hawk.. I watch it disappear while it's positioned a little bit to the right. I bank my joystick like a madman and press fire. My choice was correct, the keeper saves it but he's down and the opponent has another chance facing an empty goal. To everyone's surprise, he puts it wide. Mark shouts. I smile. Mr Dig is made of flesh and bone after all. At that point, I knew I was going to win. The final score was 6-3. "I'd like to thank the Kick Off Association..."

I will add if I may........

1) Alkis has a much better joystick than I've seen before. Like from a console in an arcade. Apparently you can't buy them any more.

2) It's very difficult to score against Alkis. In fact I found it impossible. I am not an 'over the top' punter. My diagonal balls were soaked up easily by the deep number 5. My inter-passing broke down on the horde of bodies that in 5-3-2 defence. My dribbling beat 1 man, 2 men, but there always seemed to be a 3rd, or 4th if I got past the 3rd. Basically my style of play sucks against Alkis. Most other people seem to have this problem too!

3) Alkis *does* score the same goal over and over again It's a gaping weakness in the 4-2-4 tactic. The sweeper is too far forward and too close to the other defenders. Alkis exploits this with 'over the top' and control switches confusingly between the defenders. It ends with the 'crab' goal - one-on-one with the keeper, shuffle to the side and do a straight shot.

4) People shouldn't really complain about this as Alkis didn't fly 1000's of miles to play anything less than 100% effective tactics. If I had a goal that always worked, I'd pull it out again and again under pressure.

5) I will add for the 567th time that I designed my own Player Manager tactic which would stop the crab goal every time. Vasilis has seen the one (m2mdeep), with the sweeper permanently on the edge of the 6-yard box. I also have a couple of defenders so tough they would flatten the forward every time before he could shoot.

6) Yes, I know I'm not allowed to use them.

well, i dont agree on that. I played against Alkis in the first round. He (offcourse) won with 8-2, i really sucked at the tournament but i scored 2 goals against Alkis, if i can do that you guys im sure you can 2. It's true that Alkis scores very often at the same way. But i dont see a paragraph in the rules where says he can't do that
Alkis deserved 2 plkay the final but 2 my opinion Mark deserved 2 win

Some people should stop whining. It doesn't matter how you score, as long as you do. I see nothing wrong in scoring the same way all the time. It's up to you to change your tactics so that you won't allow him scoring that easy goal!

I'd love to play against you sometime Alkis, but I'm afraid I've stopped playing KO2 since I got my hands to a UKO beta. Hopefully we'll have a UKO tournament sometime.

I agree, I scored 3 against him on the Friday, admitedly that was early in the weekend, but i'm crap Shame !! Still you have to agree he's got most of us beat at defense by simply being more consisant than us all

I lost against Alkis in a practice game with 3-1, that was my best game against him the whole tournament.

I don't agree with you Alkis...
I have a great defence, just Mark P did more than 2 goals with me!
But the fact is that if I play with you and I'm TeamA ,well...be sure to lose with a lot of goals!!!If I'm TeamB be sure you win with a lot of goals!!!!
Me,you & Mark play in a way that is really TeamA dipending...

TeamA, TeamB, almost same thing in a 5min game. I think though that the tournament winner could be anyone. Mark did well, Gianluca too, but Alkis was more focused. That's all. Mark and Gianluca are definatelly more exciting to watch, but Alkis was more "strict to the point".

I agree with Vasilis on this point.. Alkis knows everything about tactics and subsitutions... My bro already said it.. We never change tactics and we never subsitute because we just hate that.. We just want to play Kick Off and have lots of fun.. No hassling around with tactis and subsitutions.. (and long balls from the midfield.. )
But if you want to win a serious tournament you'll have to use tactics (and maybe subsitutes, I doubt that one...).. I also found it a bit shame that Alkis, with a less attractive style, won the tournament, but hey it was the most effective method, so he deserved to win..
The way he analyzed me.. amazing.. I knew he played 5-3-2 and my bro and Kees told me I should play 5-3-2 against him, but I didn't want to do that, because it is just not my style.. I never play 5-3-2.. I played the whole tournament with 4-2-4, so I wanted to play the final with 4-2-4.. And I still think you can beat Alkis with a 4-2-4 formation... but with a 5-3-2 tactic it is probably easier to beat him...
Next time I maybe use tactics, but don't be surprised when I play the entire next tournament with 4-2-4... Kick Off is all about fun, so fun is the most important thing to me...

Mr Dig keep on playing 4-2-4!!!!!!!!
Alkis can be beat with 4-2-4 I am sure, come on people lets not get scared!
Mr Dig in the final I felt Alkis was winning the majority of headers and it doesnt matter what formation you use it doesnt matter when it comes to headers!
And Swift....player manager.....no comment......

George Koumoutsos always uses 4-2-4 and he has won more games against Alkis.

Well I was feeling better in the previous thread (Harsh) but there's just too much crappy defamation in this one for me to ignore.
To everyone: I DO NOT SCORE THE SAME GOAL OVER AND OVER! I scored a lot of goals, (79) this is the most frequent Kick Off 2 goal, so you saw it many times! I scored lobs! I scored long diagonal shots! I scored diagonal passes and headers! I scored parallel crosses and headers! I scored foul kicks! I scored SIX DAMNED CORNER KICKS, how many of you scored EVEN ONE? I overheard many of you say that they are useless, well not when I'm playing they aren't. There is NO GOAL that you can score and I can't.
To Pim: Your post is the best proof to my point! If you remember,I was winning 7-0 at that moment. You switched to 5-3-2, probably to avoid conceiving more goals, and you scored two goals right after! What does that teach you?
To Gianluca: WHAT THE..? I was Team B in the final, remember????? My way of playing is anything BUT Team A depending (that would be 4-3-3, but that's another story).
To Mark: "I also found it a bit shame that Alkis, with a less attractive style, won the tournament" Yeah I'm sure you did.
To Martin: "it doesnt matter what formation you use it doesnt matter when it comes to headers" I disagree. It is very difficult to win most of the headers with a 4-2-4 against a 5-3-2.
To Vasilis: You of all people... remember how many goals I used to score against you until you switched to 5-3-2? You couldn't even get a draw!

It seems like everyone will be happier if I don't participate in the 2002 tournament.
Remember, remember, the 4th and the 3rd of November
