UK Championships 2024 Preston 1 June

Postby iankay » Sun Jan 14, 2024 11:27 pm

Edit 8 March:
Still aiming for Saturday 1 June, roughly 1200-1900, but to save everyone reading all this thread, it'll probably be at my house now and not the venue I originally suggested.

Edit 4 February:
As mentioned further down this discussion, I'm now tentatively going for Saturday 1 June, if that's OK?

- - - - -

I'm thinking of trying to organise a tournament near mine on the North side of Preston, Apr/May/Jun/Jul/Aug.
So we could call it the 2024 UK Championships if no-one else is planning one.

There's a decent reasonable venue about a mile from where I live with kettle/microwave/fridge currently available every Saturday in spring and summer except 20 July, but we'd need to agree the date and book well in advance: https://bartonvillagehall.org
I've got two spare bedrooms and space for a few more in sleeping bags, and the venue is about 400 metres from http://www.bestwestern.co.uk/hotels/bar ... tern-84324
Very rough early plan is to start Saturday lunchtime and finish Saturday evening, with enough time for people to drive up and back on the day, but we have plenty of time to adjust timings. Obviously it would be ace to have a few people stay over afterwards, and maybe the night before too.
Easy to find from the M6 although it's always slow getting past Manchester.
Six miles north of Preston train station unfortunately, although Euston to Preston is only 2h 10min.
I'm short of kit though, just got the one Amiga and no monitors.
Please let me know what you think!

I will be most probably up for this. Preston not too far and easily within travelling distance from myself in Bury. Depends on dates.

Need to attend another UK tournament, did one in Manchester a few years back where I did a piss poor showing (think played 10, lost 9, drew 1) which made me go back and practice again, so was a good thing..... You think you are half decent against the CPU until you come up against other players

1. Yes!
2. 2024 could be the year...
3. Beats my first ever UK Champs in 2013 where I averaged 0.25 points per game (4/16).

Very keen to hear from others, including dates to aim for or avoid, and even if it's only to say maybe yes, maybe no.

Do it Freshy. You can probably get there quicker than me, that's a 4 hour drive! So probably out of range for me. Do we still use that same shitty software, or have we modernised?

Some of us still use Fixtures.exe, if that's what you're thinking of

I've been wanting to for ages, but as per usual, this year my travel-plans have been mostly set for quite a while, so I can't see any actual chance of me attending this year, not matter how tempted I am.

Hmmm, might be doable, depends what else is going on. Haydn certainly has no excuse, he's only about 30 minutes away. can't speak for Sid but I recon he'd go if I tell him to  . Haven't been in touch with Waynie for ages though, so no idea if he's be up for it.
