Kick Off 2 WC 2013: Format discussion

Postby coldie » Tue Oct 08, 2013 4:50 pm

Hi!

I have a question regarding the tournament system. Should we play a bronze cup on sunday or just dividing in 2 groups (gold and silver)? Watching the number of challengers it's for me an important thing (regarding trophies and so on).

There is a poll. Please use the chance to vote.

Thanks in advance

Since we are so few to split bills, please make it simple and cheap.

No point having a bronze cup if there aren't at least 30 people participating in my opinion.

If we have 20 people in total (which I am not sure we can even guarantee!) then we are looking at the options of -

Option 1

Day 1 - 2 leagues with 10 players in each Play x 2
Day 2 - Top 6 players play in 2 GOLD leagues, bottom 4 in 2 SILVER leagues.

This would leave a Silver cup competition with just SEMI and FINAL
Gold we would need Top 4 in each going into quarter finals, which seems a bit odd.

Option 2

Day 1 - 1 League with 20 players, play each other x1
Day 2 - Top 12 players play in 2 GOLD leagues, bottom 8 in 1 SILVER leagues (play x 2 maybe?) and then Semi/Finals from top 4

obviously a lot of other options, and you could mix and match the above to get the same outcome.

We simply CANNOT only have 10 players in the Gold competition, this would be ridiculous unless it was 1 League (which no one wants surely?)

Or perhaps we do bite the bullet and go for a full big League for the GOLD Cup on day 2 with a limited number of players 12 x 1 or 10 x 2?) and then just have the quarters so that

#1 plays # 8
#2 plays #7 etc etc

I am thinking, that the brone cup isn't necessary this year (regarding to the amount of players).

Well, if we say, that the best 12 players will go on sunday to the gold cup we will have the other players in the silver cup.

My favorite format would be (20 players):

Day 1: 2 leagues with 10 players (play x2)
Day 2: Top 6 player go to 2 Gold leagues (x1) and the others in 1 silver cup league (x1). The top 4 players of each gold cup will go forward with quarter finals (1st group A against 4th group B ......). the last 2 of the gold leagues and the best 6 of the silver league will play for the places from 9th place until 16th place in a league system (x1) the rest will play to avoid the game of shame in league modus (x1 or x2 (depends on amount of players)).

so each player could play on day 2 a good number of games.

hmm, it's difficult to say the right format not knowing the exact number of players

I propose that SC is awarded to player placed in 9th position.

As in CL where you may not advance to 1/8 finals, but merge into uefa cup.

The more I think of it, the worse it seems.

Having two groups of 9 or 10 players and setting that best six will play on sunday for the WC is in fact destroying the SC, and making the middle class having to useless play the big monters on sunday, so in the end all we will have is WC and Bronze Cup. It leaves the middle class with nothing to play for on sunday.

Of course I could try my best and finish 7th of my saturday group... but I would very much rather have a more logical distribution of players. Only the best must play in the gold group on sunday, and it only takes a quick look at the registrations page to see that we can hardly say that we will have 8 players with the usual quality you must expect in the sunday WC groups. By making these 8 into 12, you are only killing the Silver Cup.

I kinda agree with Rodolfo here. I say we have to cups on sunday, The CL (World Cup) with the top 8 from saturday, and the UEFA CuP (Silver Cup), with the rest.

It would be nice if we thought of a format that gives us more than just a handful of games per player on Sunday.

How about this: Nobody gets qualified or disqualified on Saturday.

Say there are 20 players, two groups of 10, 2 legs. We only play for placements, not for qualifications. Then we are divided into four groups of 5 on Sunday, 2 legs. The first two of each group play in the WC quarter finals, the third & fourth ones in the SC quarter finals and the remaining players play classification matches.

So the idea is, we do not divide the players into "cups" after Round 1, we do it after Round 2, so that Sunday does not seem so empty of games.

I know it's not much fun when there are no real winners or losers in the first round, but it's better than having very few games or very few opponents on Sunday.

Instead of 2 groups of 10, 2 legs (18 games each).. we have one group of 20, 1 leg (19 games each).

Everybody gets to play everybody. Epic win for all.

Both Alkis and Steve idea may work. My only minor con is that it does not look WCish

That is mostly why I proposed aborting WC and call it Voitsberg International. It was not a way to boycott, neither a provocation, and by all means I do not want to even slightly disrespect our hosts. It is just that this number of players hardly fits in any usual WC format. But on the other hand we could have a great two days league, all in one big group, more like Steve said.
