alkis21's Top 21 of tournament pictures

Postby alkis21 » Fri Feb 24, 2012 5:45 pm

Things are kind of lonely in the forum lately. I decided to make a list of my all-time favorite tournament pictures so that they keep me company. Sorry to those who are not in them, obviously there are dozens more that I like but after all these years I have thousands of them.

21. Have a lot of fun!
Image
2005, Cologne world cup, the first time we ever saw the projector being used for anything other than Kick Off matches and that image was part of Sascha's excellent initial presentation.

20. Fratelli d'Italia
Image
2009, Voitsberg world cup, Gianni rises to the skies of Austria and his compatriots pick him up.

19. Bowlling gang
Image
2010, Dusseldorf world cup, The gay lights may be annoying for bowling, but they do help taking great pictures.

18. Rose is a Rose
Image
2007, Rome world cup, youngest person to travel to a world cup ever?

17. Drunk and loving it
Image
2003, Groningen world cup, and all the participants were partying in the same club.

16. Politically correct
Image
2006, Rickmansworth world cup, Astrid and her sister Saskia were the first female players ever.

15. Three and a half men
Image
2011, Birmingham world cup, the 10th for Rodolfo, Robert and me so we made some geeky shirts and gave one to Steve for his 11th.

14. I kissed a girl, I liked it
Image
2003, Groningen world cup, words cannot describe the awesomeness.

13. Back where I belong
Image
2007, Greek champs, after my worst world cup performance ever and murmurs that I was no longer an elite player this title was just what I needed.

12. The big man himself
Image
2003, Milan, such a historic tournament: The first Milan gathering, the first Italian champs, the first appearance of Gianni and the other Milanese and Dino Dini's only appearance in a KOA tourney.

11. We all look alike
Image
2011, Alkis Polyrakis tournament, and what better way to show the world that the evening was not just about me than a group picture?

10. Singing in the sand
Image
2008, Athens world cup, Andreas in the best shirt of shame ever.

9. The Spanish armada
Image
Jerez, 2003, believe it or not Rodolfo wasn't always alone in his country.

8. Take THAT!
Image
Rickmansworth world cup, 2006, It's outdated now but it looked great that year.

7. The Italian job
Image
Rome world cup. 2007, and you just had to be there to know how legendary that moment was.

6. Hell(and) is other people
Image
First Helland tournament, 2003, with Robert Swift and Martin Jeffrey as guests.

5. Habemus Rex
Image
Athens world cup, 2008, and Gianni is finally in his throne.

4. Rest in peace, old friend
Image
Athens world cup, 2002, A great picture of George Koumoutsos, Vasilis' childhood friend and a fantastic Kick Off player who left this world so early.

3. Spyro burning Rome
Image
2007, Rome world cup, Spyros repeats his triumph and the camera captures a great celebratory picture.

2. United colors of KOA
Image
2006, Rickmansworth world cup, no words are needed I believe. This photo is the image of the Kick Off Association.

1. The best picture in the universe
Image
2001, Dartford world cup. In this picture, you can just feel the delight of the artist in his consistent pursuit of an art of spontaneity, sunlight, and colour. The revealing patterns of craquelure, the superposition of the paint layers, the location of retouches and restorations. Lights are set up at very shallow angles to the surface of the picture to create what is known as grazing light or raking light. You can learn a lot about the artist’s technique as well as what he may have intended to convey to his viewing public by examining his brushstrokes in such great detail. The emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities is so eloquent.

Thanks for the nice work! It was a pleasure to see all those pics again.

I would not have expected to see the other FEKO men; they hardly deserve any kind of KOA tribute. Above all, I miss the never taken picture of the 2004 quarter finalists. To get that off my chest I will have to reach QF again, or, much easier, invent some time travel device to go back there.

Great collection of pictures and KOA moments in time, Alkis. 8) First time I'd seen some of those but for certain others I think I'm losing count! :P

Great collection! I think that you also condensed 11 years in 21 pictures in a superb way. Unluckily I joined the KOA just in late 2003 and I missed the fun of the early years of the KOA, but I'm very happy that I have many tales to tell about most of great moment that you spotted out. And I'm sure that much has still to come!
I would like to share some pictures too, I will do it soon!

Great moments captured, thx for that!
For me it proves two things:
* I missed many things one shouldn't miss because of my late discovery of the KOA.
* Even if the best case comes to be - another decade with annual WC's and even if I'll manage to attend every single one of them - I'll always feel like a newbie.

If Ely hadn't managed to salvage no 14 from his corrupted memory card, he would have sufferred extreme consequences. I'm happy I learnt what "stout" means in Dutch. Thanks Gunther!

No 4 is heartbreaking.

So many sentiments in these pictures. Thanks Alkis.
