All the goals, the stats, the stories & more - KO2 WC 2011

Postby gdh82 » Mon Nov 14, 2011 10:16 am

Wow - what a weekend! This World Cup has gone by in a blurrrrr for me and as one of the organisers it has been more thrilling, demanding and rewarding that I could have imagined.

I'll write more later as real life is calling me but for now I just want to say thanks again to everyone who attended (what a warm, friendly and fun gathering spririt there was!), and also to those who couldn't attend for their good wishes, to the co-organisers Steve E and Simon K (what a rollercoaster eh lads!), to the extended team of Alkis, Robert, Camberman, Durban, Gianni, George Ka and Frank (all of your support was invaluable), to the score inputters Hannah, Sandra, Claire and Cameron (you were all stars), and everyone who helped with the hardware effort. I'm sure all World Cups are the same but it really was a collective effort and we couldn't have done it without you. Sorry if I've missed anyone.

Anyway, this thread's for YOUR stories, match reports, and pictures. Short or long posts are welcome, we'd love to hear from you and any World Cup memories you'd like to share.... :)

Many thanks to the organisers for a thoroughly enjoyable weekend! The hotel and facilities were very nice, and the layout of the gameroom was fantastic.

Garry, Steve and Simon have clearly put in much time and effort, and special thanks go to them. Also worth mentioning is the patient and selfless work carried out by the ladies who carried out the score inputting. And of course, Robert's elite microphone work.

Despite their sizeable contribution to the event, the KOBRA guys do not appear to have been affected by organiser syndrome. Their KO2 skills have clearly surpassed my expectations, and to occupy two out of the quarter-final berths is a worthy reward for all the preparation and training they have had over the last 3-4 years. I didn't have as much time to chat with them as I had wanted, but this was understandable, particularly as I was unable to participate in some of the evening events. I only got to play Garry, as he was in my league, and I tried to catch-up with him, but I think I just distracted him, so sorry mate. And apologies to anyone else I may have distracted while talking during gameplay - it's just that it has been so many years since I have seen all of you and it's great we're in the same room again.

Steve, in particular, is very strong now. This is a guy who put on lockout to defend a penalty at the Runty Champs. He is now pushing the three-times champion to the limits over two legs. Can they get better? There's only one way to find out.

Finally, sorry I didn't get to say goodbye to all of you. I had to leave early and tried to catch as many of you as I could but regrettably I could not shake all your hands.

I will say/post more, but I wanted to quickly say how honoured it was to be part of the weekend.

Back home now. Thanks again to the organisers, it was an experience I will never forget!

I forgot to mention in my speech to say thank you to my dear friends and KO2 online partners Rayge and Dagh! Rayge, for introducing us to KO2 online in 2008 and Dagh for the thousands of games in which we have played and evolved together. If it was not for the games with Dagh there is no way I could play the way I play now.

Also, thank you to the KO2 online crew of Gianni, Lorenzo and Lorenzo! Over the past year we have had some great fun playing and improving together online and to meet in person was even funnier!

I made some new dear friends over this weekend, a lovely bunch of kind, warm-hearted people.

Will post a review soon.

Oops! Forgot to make the most important thank you of all! And that is to the grand architect Steve Camber! Thank you Steve, without you there would be no KO2 online!

Well 24 hours later an I am on the night shift in work....still knackered.

I don't normally write these as I am not the sentimental sort however here we go (and no pics as usual)

My World Cup started off with a visit from my old mate Jorn, which was unexpected up until 2 weeks before the event, so poor Mel went into proper housewife mode, even painting the kitchen for his arrival!

But it was a great way to start the WC weekend, we went out to a few touristy places, had a few beers, and I had a great time and my kids loved him even more. We ended up visiting York to see some Gay Vikings. I have never been to york, but it was pretty good, we even got a 'keepsake' photo of me attacking him with an Axe - good days :)

Travelled down to the WC on the train which introduced our Norweigan friend to the joys of British Rail...in fact anything with British in the name you can guarantee will be pretty shit, as we tend to keep the term 'English' for the good stuff...ie English Breakfast....But we made it to the KOA hotel ok even with the best attempts of British Rail and their 'points failures' trying to stop us - the Irony being that the points failures didn't stop me, but I had a few failures to get points during the weekend in return.

Got to the hotel and have to say apart from it getting pretty hot, it was a good choice of venue, a good breakfast (well for the KOA-ers anyway as we ate all the Bacon and Sausages and left one poor gentleman complaining that he WASNT a vegitarian!)

Had a good night on Friday and Saturday, the meal was excellent, and I somehow managed to get thru the Key Lime pie...feck me it was alsmost as big as Gianni's trophy cabinet!

Sat night was good fun bowling, I can honestly say I really fancy Fairies and Dororthy out of the Wizard of oz, but not sure why ;)

Walked back with Jorn and we bumped into the Germans in a VERY working Class british Pub! I have no idea why they chose it, but we went for a beer and a Jaegermeister and then CASINO!! I am glad I helped my friends (espeically Jorg and Jorn) win lots of money by GIVING the casino all my money in exchange :)
However I think I need confirmation from the boys in the Casino whether that big Thai lady watching us play Roulette was actually a bloke or not (as I am 100% sure she was......) Gladly none of the gang took a liking to her, so we will never know for sure...phew!

It was fking awesome to meet so many older faces, and the regulars. In particualy Gianni who is definately the nicest Italian I have ever met (apart from possibly Alessandro!) and most likely the nicest Human I have met at the same time, just a nice guy and a worth champ who's English is now better than most of the UK KOA'ers. Obviously meeting the usual assortment of Criminals Robert, Steve, Alkopop, Rodolfo, Sid, Waynie, Sutty, Simon 1 and Simon 2, Garry and Evil Steve is always a joy, but people like Andy G who I had not met before was even better.
Nice to see Simon's Bruvva again after so many years (and this time we didn't need to paint our faces to have a good time) and obviously the man himself Mr S.Screech and Cameron...great double act and blatantly looks over 18 :)
Great to meet the German Contingent again, Jorg and Peter (1 and 2) are always a good laugh, and the rest of the gang from Italy and Austria and the rest of the world....I realise I am probably going to lose this post when I send so have to cut down a few names.

The only downside of the attendees was 2 people who I think very highly of, obviously Nikos being one of them and the other being the ever so evil but well dressed Spyros who was left a a gaping hole in the weekend :(

But less sadness....

As for the games themselves. Day 1 I really thought I out-did myself. I had two close(ish) battles with Micheal Ma (who deservedly won in the end) but I did feel that I could possibly catch him somehow (which would be a shock, and probably unfair) but sadly I drew a couple of games I felt I maybe could have won and finished 5th in the group...which was still pretty good.
High point of the day has to be the 6-5 Loss to Steve Camber....I was leading with not long to go, and have NEVER beten this tw*t before. It was a good game tho, I like Steve, but would love him if he let me win more often!
Had a few 'sorry' moments, and also I believe I score the BEST goal of the whole event when Alkis's defender scored an OG from a free kick he won in his own 6 yard box....SCREAMER!! :)
I picked up 6 points from my really good friend (yes Steve he is nicer than you) Waynie. He seems to really really hate me at KO2, its funny as fuck tho as he just cannot beat me and I love it coz he is such a scummy player against the rest of you, its like a little piece of Karma I can give back to the KOA :)

Sadly on Day2 my heart wasn't in it, I was tired and maybe missing the girls at home and just didn't have that 'win or die' attitude.
I have a few excellent games against Sid, which he won but were close, and what I thought was a real turning point when Wayne had finally beaten me....only for me to pull back from 3-1, then 4-2 to 4-4 in the dying minutes....

After that tho I lost all my 'appetite' and finished very very low overall, not winning a single game after that point :(

I had really hoped Jorn could win the Silver cup this year, but as he was playing Jorg it was a close call on who I would support...and obviously great that Jorg could win in the end as he is a great player.

Finally I got my award from you all, which I will honour (or maybe use as a frizbee if I get a dog) for ever and ever, I was really touched...I actually feel more touched today thinking back.....so before I have another cry thanks again!

I also believe I may know the location of the 2012 World Cup and let me just say that 'I AM THERE' if the location is true :)

God speed to you all, and thanks for making the past few days so fricking enjoyable again, I hate you all coz I would like to not have to turn up each November but you keep fecking up my plans so looks like I will be around (propping up the tables, the bars and the chipstacks of the hotels) for a few more years yet :)

Oh and I have finally ordered a new Comp Pro, I am going to be Elite next year so Bring it on :)

Oh shite...

Funny moments have to be posted of course......

Erm -

#1 - Not Really KOA related but some daft cow in the York Museum wouldn't let me and jorn visit the little boys room at the same time, she seemed to think we were going to use if for 'other purposes'. Jeeesh!

#2 - Again not really World Cup related, but Jorn told me about Waynies Runty Gathering where Steve Evil used lockout to defend a penalty....he told me during the WC Semi Final so I guess its kinda related a bit....pissed myself on the way home laughing about that tho :)

#3 - About 100 of Robs Comments in the bar on day 1 and day 2 when watching the football. He's a funny fucker and knows quite a lot about football and not just KO2!

#4 - The 'Hello Sailor' moment at the Bowling...think we all know what I am referring to :)

#5 - Alkis coming running into the Bar shouting 'There are Strippers in our Hotel, there are strippers on the 5th Floor'....never seen a man so excited but also so frightened at the same time :)

#6 - Peter attacking the Dealer in Blackjack every time he didn't win...he was a massive fecker as well, could have been really funny...but luckily when he DID win he was best friends again ;)

Being part of the organising team it was a little difficult to get a 'broad' feeling of the event due to constantly trying to sort out problems etc. But lots of great moments I remember are...

the meal on Friday. What a feast! I dont normally leave food but had to leave the keylime pie due to being stuffed on the joint of pork I had for the main course.

Being shite at Bowling and then getting a strike on my last bowl! Like KO2, I start off crap and stick at it :)

Tournament at 1am on Sunday morning

Losing the shirt of shame and then finding the fucker with 5 minutes to spare

Alkis: "is evening meal mean long walk in English?" on Friday night...

Watching Si try to win something on the arcades and then having a go when he finished and thinking id win on my first go. hehe

The atmosphere for the semi final when Andy played Alkis "go Andy!" - it was like a match at Wimbledon but with better atmosphere.

Me and Frank pissing ourselves when the fixture software said "Andy v Alkis" for the 3/4 play off. wtf happened there? unsure, but you know when you'r really stressed and just have the laugh at the absurdity? this was one of those moments. hehe

Having great chats with Steve S and his son Cameron.

Playing Thorsten...one of the most entertaining players of Kick Off.

The two finalists playing along and not minding the national anthems before the final.

3 breakfasts on Sunday morning about an hour after being ill (must have been something I ate... )

Gaz's wake up call!

Simon's comedy stint on the mic...mate, if we knew you were that good we'd have you on doing a show!  Superb stuff.

Steve Camber for saving the bacon on Friday night to ensure I could load up the fixture software to allow me to set everything up and Frank too...Frank was an absolute star on Day 2 fixture wise. Despite being a guest he volunteerd and stepped in when things were getting hairy and did an amazng job.

Really appreciate all the well wishers too. :) Seeing peoples faces when they were having such a great time.
Also the fixture inputters too. I know Hannah was feeling under the weather but kudos to her for staying throughout the whole of Saturday. Great organisation by them all.

Pleasure to meet Waynie and Jon G's familys too :)

Mr champione, i have done exactly that several times myself. After doing that mistake many times enough i now always write it in a text-document, word etc, or at least save it on such, before clicking on any kind of update-page buttom. Highly recommended!

If that happens for me, I just hit back and the text is still there. Maybe it's just a Chrome thing?

Out of habit, I usually do a "CTRL-A, CTRL-C" before hitting submit anyway so the text is in the clipboard.
