Any good tips on new phone?

Postby Freshmaker » Tue May 06, 2014 7:49 am

Guys.

I'm looking at getting a new phone. Not sure if I will get one, but I'm certainly considering. I'm NOT looking to get an iphone, I'm sticking to the android platform.

- I want mucho ram, as I HATE having to uninstall apps because the apps you can't remove are growing bigger and bigger.
- Battery-life. Muy importante.
- I don't really like the huge phones. I like the phones that actually fits into your pocket...

I really like my Sony Xperia S, but the battery is too short-lived and it's too short on ram.

Any good ideas?

I'm interested in exactly this too - I've had my Xperia S for two years now and getting the same problems - very annoying having to uninstall apps just to make room for updates.. even with moving stuff to "SD".

Ideas, people!

I've considered turning to windows-phone, so I could get myself a Nokia again, but I just find that I'm too used to using Android, and my daily life and work-routine-life is kinda dependant on the phone (mailing, calendar, contacsynch, etc), so I'm sticking with Android.

And yeah, it bums me out, but as much as battery and ram is an issue, so is also the price... Discuss :)

Last year I decided to try Windows Phone by buying a low-end Lumia 620.

Coming from Android I was annoyed by many little things, but in the end, I prefer Microsoft's model of strict OS control. The phone is as snappy as it was on the first day and the UI model is very well thought out.

It has aged much better than my previous phone (Xperia Neo V). I haven't found a program that doesn't run or runs poorly on my device due to its RAM (512 MB - top end devices have 1MB) or its processor (dual core - top end now have quad). I only have few games though - you might find apps with higher requirements there.

My contacts and email are still on the Google ecosystem and I have no problem accessing them.

Battery life is short on my phone, but at least the battery is removable.

Disadvantages (for all Windows phones):
- No Swype-like keyboard
- No universal search for in-phone content (even though there is a search hardware button they could have used)
- Poor music player
- App selection
- No slow-motion video! (the built-in codecs supports up to 60FPS)

Great input Spyros, thanks. Maybe I should consider winphone after all...

A big issue though; how is the choice of apps? Most are made for either android and/or iphone, like apps from the government/council and banks and such. I'm a bit afraid my smartphone experience would lose a bit, with not getting access to all the apps I need (want...).

Another vote here for a Lumia Windows Phone. Very professional interface (particularly in comparison with Androids), and the normally superior hardware Nokia has. I have a 925 myself and it's the best camera you can get your hands of... with the exception of superior and more expensive Lumias :D

Unlike Spyros, I have great battery life on my 925. Often more than 2 days with internet usage and wifi etc

You have apps for just about everything on windows phone. And you HAVE to try this expenses app called Logi!

The Logi is what really turns me off the windows phones...

Seriously, I'm very intrigued by this: http://oneplus.net/

I've not seen that one before. A very interesting option, I'll keep an eye on it.
