iPad alternative... ? Best tablet

Postby Sid » Sat May 18, 2013 7:05 pm

Hi all,

1) Additional Tablet

Thinking of buying a Google/Asus Nexus 7... but then just read the 2nd gen maybe released soon:
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/04/ ... 5L20130403

I want something for my wife and 2 year old daughter to use.
I have the iPad 3, and the iPhone is too small for my wife to use, but she still does anyway.
Another iPad is too expensive, as much as I love it.

2) iPad alternative?

(The Asus Tranformer Pad Infinity looks good too! ... but too expensive for the wife, unless I give her my iPad and use this for work (mainly use Numbers on the Apple)
On a side note' is this better the iPad 3/4? - as you can plug USB drives into it, as you can with the Nexus 7)
http://www.techradar.com/news/mobile-co ... cleContent
"Android has an OTF cable (less than £2 on eBay) and and app called Nexus Media Importer (Also less than £2). With only a little knowledge, it means you can plug a USB drive into your Nexus... "

What are your thoughts, on both points?

I have a Nexus 7 (32gb). No regrets, it's a great device.

Never felt the need to plug in USB devices. I just stream data over wifi if required.

I've got the former transformer, and it's very good. The Infinity would defo be my choice if getting one today.

Streaming with the Near ... (NFC) chip? (Or whatever) but then you need other android devices too, and for that option to exist on the PC too?

I could get the Nexus 7 now, 32gb, for £199

... or indeed wait a month or two, no rush really...

Transformer Prime TF201 32gb (Autobots... Transform!! 8) )
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac ... 764/review

£580
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-EeePad-Tra ... asus+tf201

Transformer Infinity TF700 64gb
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac ... 998/review

£800
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-Transforme ... Asus+tf700

The main difference:
"Infinity has 1920 x 1200 resolution in place of the Prime's 1280 x 800, although the brightness has been kept at 600nits."

Prime is 12g lighter and has more battery power, compared to Asus website comparison.
Prime no longer available in 64gb? Just 32gb.

Is it worth the extra £230?

Transformer Pad TF300
A higher number denotes an upgrade to the Prime 201, but I can't see how, just the Bluetooth version from 2.1 to 3?
Everything else is inferior, heavier at 635g as opposed to 586kg for Prime, and 598g for Infinity, thicker at 9.9m as opposed to 8.3m, and Prime/Infinity both have Super IPS+ screens, TF300 is just IPS.

£420

Just use the wifi connection for any data transfer needs, I've never used the NFC thingy.

What Steve said. I only use NFC on my phone, to put it into different modes (music, wifi, bt, car etc).

I've got the Transformer Pad. The first one. It's perfecto imo, except for lack of mobile net. 3g would be cool. But the prices you're showing are very high. Are they that expensive? I paid about £ 400 for mine 2,5 years ago (I think).

Any device I have, has to be 3G or 4G, so I can use the mobile net when no wifi is available.
That's a must have requirement if I dispense with the iPad.

For my wife (and daughter) just wifi is fine.

2nd hand on Amazon Marketplace it's £353
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listin ... ition=used

Amazon Warehouse deals also sell for £437, with "slight imperfections"
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listin ... ition=used

Yes... does seem expensive, especially for a new one. The Ininity at £800 is a deal breaker, it's not 3G/4G either.
The Asus Infinity 700KL is an LTE version, with snapdragon dual core chip, in 16gb only... but not in UK.

Makes the Sony Xperia Tablet Z seem appealing! (Released today)

To give you an update.... no, I still haven't bought anything!
I was going to get the new Nexus 7.2, but last weeks release date only applied to the States, with UK delayed to 13th Sept.
By then, the slimmer and lighter iPad 5 will be out!

Sonys are too old in tech now... esp since new versions of Nexus and Apple are here or due...

I have just pre-ordered the Nexus 7.2, 32gb wifi, for £240 from ebuyer.com, release date of 24th August.
If as they say, I get this next day delivery, would be the perfect present for my wife's birthday, on 26th August!!
