14 million Euros for Huntelaar it is said. I'm not impressed with Magath this year. At first he basically forces the president to give him 30 million Euros for new players and then he waits until the very last minute to spend them. Why not in July? He let three important players leave: Kuranyi, who's probably better than Huntelaar, was paid less and they let him leave for free, so that's 14 million down the drain. Then Rafinha, one of only a handful of good wing defenders in the league, returning Hoogland who played well for Mainz should be able to fill the gap a bit better, but he's still injured. And Bordon of course, great centre back and not too old at 34 and Magath let him go for free. And brings in Metzelder instead. Who was never that good and sat on Madrid's bench for years - and he's from Dortmund, their arch rivals, and he plays rubbish so far and the pressure on him is already enormous. Schalke just bought another centre back, wouldn't surprise me if Metzelder ends up on the bench.

So, two defenders needlessly gone. Plus Westermann was transferred to Hamburg for 7.5 mil. I agree with Magath, he's not that good and I think the price paid was too high, but he still leaves a gap in the team which Magath failed to fill. No replacement - up to now - for Kuranyi either, sure, Raul is a big name but he's not a player I'd let play up front alone, which he had to so far. So, it's not surprising Schalke started so badly. They can still get their act together, Höwedes caught two yellows and missed the last match and he's already a very strong centre back and he'll just have step up to the challenge. The offence... well, Schalke has finished very high up in the table most the last decade but they've never been known for playing attractive football, no matter who was in charge. Hard to score against, like to score from set pieces. It's been the same under Slomka and Rutten and even last season with Magath, always a very static 4-3-3 with Kuranyi up front. Haven't had a playmaker since Lincoln was chased away... and Magath wants to change all that this season, but it won't be easy.

As for Wolfsburg - well, they have their strength up front with Diego and Dzeko and a weakness at the back. 12 mil for Kjaer who didn't impress me much at the WC. Also Hertha's Friedrich, of course, a much better deal for them, however, he caught an injury in a friendly and will be out for two more months at least. McLaren will have to find the right balance, the team could play defensively and rely on Dzeko alone, as soon as you bring on Diego you'll simply have to play offensively because that's what he's good at.

Unbelievable news that Birmingham City have brought Hleb from Barcelona. This guy was one of the most influential players for Arsenal before he left and apparently rejected moves from Liverpool and Tottenham. This is the one of the signings of the season!

That fee of 14 m euros is way too much for Huntelaar. A poor deal. Kuruanyi is a class striker, a shame he leave for free. This is imo a case of bad business.

So the Villa have found their replacement in Gerard Houllier. What do you think, Si?

Wesley to W Bremen will be interesting to follow. I have seen im play for Santos (where he is behind excellent Neymar) a couple of times, he is not bad. Attacking midfielder possibly but more like a forward i would say, he is better than Rosenberg (loaned out to spanish clup Santander if i recall correct) for sure and much younger (23).

Edgar Davids to Crystal Palace was a suprise. I guess age of 36-37 should not be a problem. Time will tell.

If you believe the magazine kicker Bremen doesn't really need Wesley, I mean that in a good sense. Schaaf thinks he has good alternatives if Wesley doesn't kick in immediately, so he's not under any great pressure.

Well, im surprised they decided to splash out the reported 7,5 m euro on him. He is not bad, but i doubt he is worth that amount. On the other hand, Bremen have proven me wrong before (case Özil) so i´ll keep my mouth shut about Wesley. I presume they sell him to Barcelona for 30 m euro within two seasons...

In England today we had a cracker of a game with Everton v Man Utd and going into Injury time, it was 3-1 to United but by the end it was 3-3 and David Moyes (Everton manager) was bemoaning the whistle going cause his team looked like winning it!

Then fast forward to the nuts and bolts of the English game in the league below the Premier League and was greeted to a fantastic game with Burnley v Preston - a local derby that was a firecracker of a game. With 10 minutes to go it was 3-1 to Preston but then they had a player sent off for time wasting and the game finished 4-3 to Burnley - amazing game.

Watched the first half of the latter, was damn boring. Mourinho looked pretty cool on the sideline chewing gum, that's about the best I can say about those 45 minutes.

In Germany we've seen one upset after the other in this early part of the season. One of my favorites for this season, Leverkusen, lost 3-6 at home a fortnight ago and now they lost again - against Hanover, my no. 1 relegation candidate, sitting comfortably near the head of the table with 7 points from the first three games. Gladbach was the team that beat Leverkusen away 6-3 and now they lost to Frankfurt 0-4 at home.

Three teams with high ambitions haven't got any points yet. Schalke (with Huntelaar) played a bit better but still lost to Hoffenheim, have to play in Lyon on Tuesday and then they clash with their arch rivals Dortmund next Sunday, who'll be favorites to win for th first time in ages. Wolfsburg and McLaren also lost for the third time in a row (against Dortmund). And there's Stuttgart, in this case I predicted a tough season ahead.
