Good first half by England. Very good performance by Defoe, lucky goal (hit hit leg) but made several succesful attacking blocks in first half. Come to think about it, James in goal been very good 135 minutes by now. Keeper in Slovenia even better, world class.

Much better all round from England. Still very worrying though as one mistake lets them back in. We could do with another goal sometime soon.

2nd half seemed to descend into the same old rubbish for England. At least they're through but things still need to seriously improve for them. How the hell any team can qualify while scoring only two goals baffles me. We are extremely fortunate to have been in such a poor, poor group. I'm actually pleased that the USA have won the group because we certainly didn't deserve to.

Happy end then for England in the group stage then, and vindication for everyone who thought Defoe should start instead of Heskey (the whole planet but Capelo?).

I'm guessing that most of you concentrated on the England match, I was watching them both (England on TV, USA on my laptop) and because the England match didn't have many chances my eyes were mostly on USA-Algeria, it was a true epic, one of the best matches so far if not the best, you won't believe the chances they missed, especially the Americans but the Algerians had their share too. I'm very glad USA went through, they totally deserved it as they have played attractive football so far and even had a wrongly disallowed goal against Slovenia.

Needed to win - we did! PHEW! :) Better passing and tempo, much improved performance all round and could have made it much more comfortable if Lampard/Gerrard/Defoe had taken their chances. Thought Defoe created space and took his goal well but Milner was my man of the match, who made the biggest difference with many excellent crosses. Rooney looked a little better and was unlucky not to score (another good save from the keeper). Still not happy with Gerard out on the left, and was gutted that when Capello finally brought Cole on, he didn't allow Gerard the central position. Not sure we should continue with two up front either, as having just one up would gives us better control of midfield. Was always unsure of Upson, started very shakily, and although not my choice, will probably keep his place mainly due to a great tackle late on. Moment of the match was when we managed to block three Slovenia shots in succession including an attempted diving-header block from Terry!!! :eeko: 8)

Ultimately we qualified and that's all that mattered today. :D Credit to the Yanks who left it late to take top spot. Saw the highlights and their victory was throughly deserved and as Alkis said, it looked a cracker of a game. Certainly wouldn't have been right if Slovenia had gone through instead.

Looks like England could meet Germany next :yikes: unless Ghana can do us a favour later!

Thank fook for that! Was listening to the game on the radio at work and from 3pm, some miserable f*ckers decided to ring us up with Technical problems lol. Was nerve wracking at the end and I thought Defoe's goal when Rooney levelled it for him was onside (Rooney appeared to be level).
Before the game I believed we should drop Rooney and although he didnt get on the scoresheet today he seemed to improve although with his goal I reckon we should pick Defoe for the next game.

Although the thought of playing Germany gives us the willies I'd prefer to play these than Ghana to be honest. Ghana will literally have the whole of the African continent cheering them on and I would imagine they'r used to the conditions (although it appears they are extremely variable with stadiums a fair bit away from each other). Whereas Germany, they'r used to similar conditions of our own and unlike England, they'v lost a game. So have Spain for that matter.
So although we'v got off to an extremely slow start - an Italian style start in a way - perhaps we'r going to emulate the Azzuri in past world cups by just going from strength to strength? I do know that all these hardships previously can only help us and bring the squad closer together.
What Capello needs to do now though is stamp his authority back on the team because before the game reporters were suggesting the players had basically chosen the team - obviously we won but how much of that was down to the manager?

And Germany is through to the quarter finals!

Fuck, the Germans next!

looking at the positives, at least they'll some classic clashes coming up (Germany vs probably Argentina in the quarters), and there's a chance for an african side to get to the semis in the weaker half of the draw...

I have just noticed (read) that either Uruguay, Ghana, the good Korea or USA will reach semifinals!

Should be Uruguay.
