These are my hopes too. THis disaster could have been avoided if we planned ahead. This is deeply political.

Also been used by George Bush in America as well to ensure he has people eating out his hand with the old 'we'l get em' mentality.

And just to demonstrate some objective journalism, see how the greek sport newspaper Metrosport manipulated a photograph fromt he fires to make it more dramatic. Compare it to the photograph on the left newspaper!

I would guess that the manipulation is so obvious that maybe they did not intend to cheat...

Sure. And what was their intention? To impress? To terrorise? It's way out of any deontology

They can make it to impress, to add dramatism to the story. But if they do not make clear in the very same edition that it is a dramatic reconstruction, then is obviously wrong.

That's outrageous journalism and reminded me of this documentary about the politics of fear. You could argue that this kind of manipulation amounts to to a similar kind of thing.

Rodolfo wrote:I have also read that fires were likely to be caused in order to get political benefit in the very near elections.

This is something a politician of the government said during the previous big fire. It's so crap, he couldn't even say it clearly, he said "green burns green", because the color of the other party is green. I don't think he believes that's true, it's part of politics.
The bad thing is that now some people really believe that supporters of PASOK, the other party, started the fires!
It's like saying that the bombs in the spanish underground were put by supporters of Zapatero, to help him win the elections.
The fires will be used by political parties, but that's 100% different.
